![]() ![]() ![]() There are some word processors that remain free, though they typically are missing something or other that you'd like to have. (You can still download Version 5.2 for free.) The price has not been set, but it is expected to be less than $100, compared to $470 for Microsoft's. Sun Microsystems has announced that starting with Version 6.0, it will charge for StarOffice, its rival to Microsoft Office. Without getting into the debate over word processors - whether you should go with the flow and use Microsoft Word like everyone else or hold out for a particular favorite - it is worth noting that one of the great software bargains is no longer free. Obviously, all such lists are idiosyncratic, depending on each user's needs and interests, so I have tried to include at least some software that I don't personally use but can understand why other people do. But there are still some free things worth having, and from time to time I make suggestions and invite readers to supplement my list with suggestions of their own. ![]() As you have no doubt noticed, and as has been well reported, a lot of things that used to be free on the Internet aren't free any more. ![]()
